Inheriting Firearms

Per MGL c. 140, § 129C(a)(iii), Massachusetts residents may possess firearms inherited from a deceased relative for up to 60 days without a license; however, within this window, you must either apply for your own LTC/FID or legally transfer the firearms. To record this transfer, you must use the "Inheritance" option on the MIRCS Unified Gun Portal, where you will be required to provide the deceased owner's information, your own licensing details, and the specific firearm information (serial number, make, and model).

PLEASE NOTE: This grace period does not allow you to carry the firearm, only possess it in your home until you receive your license. Please follow all MGL storage and transportation laws.
